Honeymoon Horror: Two Accused Withdraw Confessions in Meghalaya Murder Case

Two of the five accused in the shocking murder of Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya have now retracted their earlier statements, according to police sources. The crime, which has drawn national attention, was allegedly orchestrated by Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, in collaboration with her lover and associates.

Superintendent of Police Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor, who is leading the Special Investigation Team(SIT), stated that suspects Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi refused to speak when brought before the magistrate on Thursday. "We sent only two of the five accused to the magistrate. They did not want to make any statement. We have ample material evidence against them. We are also waiting for the FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) report," said Mr. Kharkongor.

Initially, Meghalaya Police had claimed that all involved parties had admitted their roles in the conspiracy. However, as Mr. Kharkongor clarified, "It is their right not to make a confessional statement. But material evidence is also significant. There is no issue. We have evidence in the case." Police confessions, he noted, are not admissible in court unless made voluntarily before a magistrate under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

In addition to Akash and Anand, Vishal Singh Chauhan is accused of assisting Sonam and her paramour, Raj Kushwaha, in murdering Raja during the couple’s honeymoon. The entire plot unfolded dramatically; what began as a “mission couple” report evolved into a tale of betrayal, greed, and premeditation.

The couple, hailing from Indore, had tied the knot on May 11 and traveled to Meghalaya soon after. On May 23, they vanished after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village. Raja’s lifeless body was found on June 2, approximately 20 kilometers away.

Sonam resurfaced in Gazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 8 and surrendered to authorities. She confessed to the crime on June 11, implicating her cousin Jitendra Raghuvanshi, who allegedly facilitated the first payment to the hired accomplices.

The investigation has since widened. On Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed the arrests of three more individuals: Lokendra Singh Tomar, the flat owner where Sonam stayed post-crime, Silome James, a property dealer who arranged the rental, and Balbir Ahirbar alias “Ballu”, a local security guard.

Sonam’s brother, Govind, has publicly disowned her, expressing deep remorse and pledging unwavering support to Raja’s bereaved family in their pursuit of justice.
