Imran Khan is Sworn in as Pakistan’s 22nd Prime Minister

Pakistan has got its new Prime Minister- Imran Khan. After being in politics for nearly two decades, Imran Khan attains the powerful position of a Prime Minister.

The customary ceremony began at 9:30 am at the resident house and was overseen by President Mamnoon Hussain. 300 guests were in attendance including his wife Bushra Maneka. The new Prime Minister of Pakistan appeared happy and at ease during the honorary Guard of Honor. He was also seen wearing a satisfactory smile. In addition, the legendary cricketer was looking dapper and confident in his classic black Sherwani.

During the oath-taking ceremony, Imran Khan turned emotional and even stumbled on some of the words. Mr. Khan swore, "to bear true faith and allegiance to Pakistan." He said, "I will discharge my duties and perform my functions honestly, to the best of my ability... and always in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well-being, and prosperity of Pakistan."

Members of the Pakistan team that had a victorious win in the 1992 cricket world cup, under the captaincy of Imran Khan, attended the swearing-in ceremony. Congress Leader and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu who arrived in Pakistan yesterday also attended the swearing-in ceremony of his longtime friend. He also met Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa at the oath-taking ceremony.

The legendary cricketer will be attaining the Prime Minister’s post after being nearly two decades in politics. He was offered various political positions while he was still playing cricket. He was offered a political position in Pakistan Muslim League by the then-President Muhammad Zia Ul Haq. He was also even invited by Nawaz Sharif to join his political party which he declined.

The cricketer received 176 votes by the National Assembly while his opponent Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif received 96 votes. After being elected, he addressed the National Assembly for the first time promising that he would not spare the ones who looted the country. He also vowed to bring back the looted wealth of the country. He said in the parliament “Those people who have looted the country, I promise that they will be brought to justice.”

Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf emerged as the single largest party in this year’s elections after it attained 116 seats. The numbers increased to 125 after nine independent members joined the party. The Pakistan leader created headlines when he became the first person in the history of Pakistan general elections who contested and won in all the five constituencies.

After Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s death, Mr. Khan stated that the two neighboring countries can honor the BJP Leader’s death, by establishing peace between the two countries. Even earlier, Mr. Khan had mentioned that he wanted to fix ties between the two countries. “You take one step forward, we will take two," he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Pakistan leader exchanged phone calls and discussed peace talks and development policies between the two countries.

Imran Khan’s swearing-in will end the leadership of two prominent parties in Pakistan namely Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) after decades of their ruling.
