Indian Army and Navy Commandos Showcase Extreme Combat Diving Skills in Sikkim
Indian Army para forces and Navy Marcos conducted a gruelling high-altitude combat diving exercise in Sikkim, showcasing endurance, precision, and adaptability, while reinforcing joint strength and readiness for unpredictable battlefield conditions.
Kolkata: In a remarkable display of endurance and synergy, the Indian Army’s para special forces joined hands with the Navy’s marine commandos, Marcos, for a week-long joint scuba and combat diving exercise. Conducted in bone-chilling conditions at an altitude of nearly 17,000 feet in Sikkim, the training from August 30 to September 5, according to a Defence official’s statement on Monday.
Such high-intensity drills are not only about strengthening technical proficiency but also about reinforcing jointmanship between the armed services. The official explained that these exercises refine specialised combat skills, making sure India’s elite warriors remain mission-ready across diverse landscapes, ranging from the daunting Himalayan altitudes to the abyssal depths of the seas.
The training modules were meticulously structured to push participants beyond conventional comfort zones. Soldiers engaged in open circuit air diving, closed circuit pure oxygen diving, precision dives up to 17 metres in icy waters, and even combat night diving. These activities, executed in extreme cold-water conditions, were designed to sharpen adaptability, enhance strategic stamina, and elevate the boundaries of combat capability.
“The high-altitude environment added unique challenges, reinforcing operational readiness and expanding the limits of combat diving capability,” the official remarked. The rarefied atmosphere at such altitudes reduced oxygen levels, making even routine tasks more strenuous. Despite these hurdles, both forces displayed exceptional professionalism, ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
The exercise was carried out amid treacherous terrain, frigid lakes, and unpredictable weather, testing everyone's ounce of skill and determination. This joint endeavour, the Defence statement added, underscored the resilience and courage of India’s elite commandos. It also highlighted their preparedness for future battlefields, where unpredictability is often the sole constant.
Operating in such an unforgiving environment required soldiers to exhibit not only strength but also neuroplasticity, mettle, and tactical precision. Combat diving, when integrated into broader joint operations, fortifies versatility and ensures smoother inter-service collaboration.
Addressing the participants at the conclusion of the drill, the team commander noted: “Training in these extreme conditions tests every aspect of a soldier’s endurance, skill and mental strength. It ensures that when called upon, our teams can operate effectively in any environment, no matter how harsh or demanding.”
By embracing these formidable challenges, the forces once again affirmed their commitment to safeguarding the nation with tenacity, valour, and an ever-expanding horizon of operational capabilities.
