Instagram Empowers Users to Curate Their Feed with Algorithm Tuning Feature
Instagram is testing a new algorithm-tuning feature that allows users to customize their content preferences, offering more autonomy, transparency, and a refined browsing experience across Reels and the Explore tab.
Instagram has started experimenting with an innovative feature that lets users personalise their algorithm-based recommendations by selecting or removing topics of interest. The rollout will begin with Reels and is expected to expand to the Explore page soon. The update, introduced by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri via Threads, aims to provide users with greater sovereignty over their content preferences and browsing experiences. This step echoes Meta’s broader commitment to enhancing customisation and transparency across its suite of applications.
Mosseri unveiled that Instagram is testing a tool allowing users to “tune their algorithm,” granting them more control over what appears in their feed. Found within the Your Algorithm section under Settings, this feature enables users to view and adjust the topics that shape their recommendations. It begins by summarising engagement trends in Mosseri’s example, including Luxury Watches, Fashion Week, Bad Bunny, Stand-up Comedy, and Concerts.
Users can tap the Add+ option to include topics they wish to explore more or remove areas that feel repetitive or irrelevant. However, this algorithmic fine-tuning will initially be limited to Reels until further rollout phases commence.
The experiment represents part of Instagram’s evolutionary strategy to strengthen user agency, following prior tools that let users restrict sensitive content, implement parental controls, and refine post recommendations. The goal is to establish a symbiotic equilibrium between platform guidance and individual preference, offering a digital experience that feels more authentic and resonant to each user’s interests.
This new approach aligns with a growing technocultural shift toward greater algorithmic transparency, empowering individuals to understand and influence the digital currents shaping their daily experiences. By offering users a bespoke curation interface, Instagram is not only modernising its recommendation systems but also acknowledging the cognitive fatigue many experience from unsolicited content exposure.
Ultimately, the feature signifies Instagram’s intent to transition from a one-size-fits-all model to an empathetic ecosystem, one that mirrors human nuance and prioritises interactive autonomy over passive consumption.
