The acclaimed Booker Prize 2023 has been awarded to Irish writer Paul Lynch for his dystopian novel ‘Prophet Song.’
The book has received a lot of positive responses by the judges. They’ve described the book as a triumph of “emotional storytelling, bracing and brave.”
‘Prophet Song’ is an intriguing story set in the beautiful country of Ireland. The novel’s main protagonist Eilish Stack is a scientist and a mother of four. One day, her doorbell rings, and she finds secret service GNSB at her doorstep, enquiring about her husband.
Her husband who is a trade unionist comes under scrutiny and soon disappears. Eilish’s life turns topsy turvy thereafter. She has to battle a larger system which can’t be questioned, whilst also taking care of her children and her father. While searching for her missing husband, Eilish witnesses Ireland descending into tyranny.
Many have appreciated the elegant language and poetic style of writing used in the book. Overall, it is a dark read. A unique aspect about the book is it doesn’t have paragraph breaks and quotation marks. The author has taken inspiration from real world events including Brexit and the rise of nationalism in Europe.
According to Edi Edugyan, the chair of this year’s judging panel for the Booker Prize, Lynch's novel “captures the social and political anxieties of our current moment. Readers will find it soul-shattering and true, and will not soon forget its warnings”.
“I wanted to deepen the reader's immersion to such a degree that by the end of the book, they would not just know, but feel this problem for themselves,” Paul Lynch said in comments published on the Booker Prize website.
Paul Lynch has become the fifth Irish author to win the Booker Prize after Iris Murdoch, John Banville, Roddy Doyle and Anne Enright.
It took the author four years to write this book. Speaking about his experience on writing the ‘Prophet Song’, the Booker Prize winner expressed, “This was not an easy book to write. The rational part of me believed I was dooming my career by writing this novel.Though I had to write the book anyway. We do not have a choice in such matters.”
