Is Technology Hurting Our Brains? A New Study Challenges the Idea of 'Digital Dementia'

A new study from the University of Texas and Baylor University offers fresh insight. Published in Nature Human Behaviour, it found no proof that using digital tools causes “digital dementia.” Older adults who used technology often showed less cognitive decline.
What is ‘digital dementia’?
This idea, first mentioned by German psychiatrist Manfred Spitzer in 2012, suggests that using digital devices too much weakens our brains by making us too dependent on them. Critics point to:

- Relying on phones to remember things.
- Increased distractions from constant notifications.
A Fresh Take on an Old Concern
The recent study, led by neuropsychologists Jared Benge and Michael Scullin, analyzed data from 57 studies involving over 411,000 people aged 50 and above. Their method, called a meta-analysis, looked for links between the technology used and cognitive health.
Their findings? Older adults who used digital tools had a 58% lower chance of cognitive decline. The odds ratio was 0.42—— significantly lower than 1, showing a strong association.
Even when adjusting for other factors like income or health conditions, the link held. Interestingly, this protective effect was even stronger than benefits from physical activity or blood pressure control.
The Way We Use Tech Matters
Although we can’t yet say technology causes better brain health, the study shows it might help keep minds sharp. Activities like learning new devices or apps can boost cognitive agility and promote neuroplasticity. Researchers call this a kind of “technological reserve”—similar to how learning music or reading keeps the brain active.
Using tech can also help older adults stay socially connected, boosting both independence and mental well-being.
