Your heart might be aging faster than you are, according to groundbreaking findings recently published in JAMA Cardiology. The research, spearheaded by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, uncovers a concerning discrepancy between biological and “heart age,” especially in men. This study, a meticulous meta-analysis, introduces the PREVENT Risk Age Calculator, an avant-garde online tool created to help individuals evaluate their cardiac health using relatable metrics.

The calculator, as reported by Fox News, leverages a matrix of personal health data-cholesterol, BMI, medications, smoking history, diabetes status, and blood pressure- to generate an estimated cardiovascular risk age. Instead of the traditional percentage-based risk model, this tool reframes the risk as an age, making it cognitively intuitive for users.

“Heart age, or PREVENT age, may be particularly useful for patients and clinicians and be more effective in preventing heart disease,” stated Dr. Sadiya Khan, lead researcher and the Magerstadt professor of cardiovascular epidemiology at Northwestern. She emphasized that transforming intricate medical risks into a familiar numerical format—age—facilitates better patient understanding and engagement.

The ultimate goal? To foster informed conversations between doctors and patients, enhancing preventive care strategies for cardiac events like strokes, heart attacks, and heart failure. The tool’s validity was rigorously examined using data from over 14,000 individuals aged 30 to 79, none of whom had prior cardiovascular conditions.

Upon calculating and comparing their heart and chronological ages, researchers found significant deviations. Women showed an average heart age of 55.4, exceeding their actual average age of 51.3. Meanwhile, men exhibited a starker contrast, an average heart age of 56.7 compared to their chronological age of 49.7. Such findings, referred to by experts as cardiodivergence, may have profound implications for public health policy.

Dr. Khan advises individuals not to panic over slight age mismatches but to take action if the variance exceeds five years. “We hope this new heart age calculator will help support discussions about prevention and ultimately improve health for all people,” she said.

Nonetheless, the researchers acknowledged a caveat. The accuracy of the PREVENT tool could fluctuate based on how "optimal risk" is defined. “Population-based percentiles of risk can provide a complementary approach... but these are influenced by suboptimal population health,” the team noted.

This tool, though promising, must undergo wider evaluation to ensure clarity and applicability across diverse demographics. As Dr.Khan summed it up, “This type of tool needs to be tested widely to determine if it is more readily understood.”
