Italy Harnesses AI to Combat Rising Landslide Threats Amid Climate Change
Italy faces growing landslide dangers due to climate change. With over a million people at risk, a new AI assistant will guide citizens using real-time data from the IdroGEO platform.
Over a million residents in Italy now inhabit zones deemed highly vulnerable to landslides, a phenomenon exacerbated by the ongoing effects of climate change. On Wednesday, Italy’s premier public research entity, ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale), highlighted this escalating peril while unveiling an artificial intelligence-based assistant designed to assist citizens in evaluating potential geohazards.
"Climate change is increasing the frequency of stronger storms, amplifying risks of landslides and floods, and spreading them to areas that were historically less exposed," the institute stated, drawing attention to the intensifying unpredictability of weather events. These turbulent shifts are no longer confined to topographically sensitive regions, but are now affecting previously unscathed landscapes.
According to ISPRA, the content of terrain susceptible to severe landslide hazards has risen significantly, growing from 8.7% in 2021 to 9.5% by the following year. This upward trend indicates a growing threat to habitation and infrastructure, with an estimated 1.3 million individuals, around 2.2% of the national population, currently residing in these precarious zones.
"Italy remains among the European countries most exposed to the risk of landslides,” the institute remarked, underscoring its geographical fragility. They recalled recent catastrophic episodes, such as the tragic 2022 landslide on Ischia, an island off the coast of Naples, and the widespread inundation in Emilia-Romagna during 2023. These calamities are stark examples of how anthropogenic climate disturbances are fueling natural disasters.
To mitigate the looming risk and increase public cognizance, ISPRA introduced a cutting-edge AI assistant. This digital aide will be integrated with the IdroGEO public platform, a dynamic interface offering cartographic details and hydrological data on land instability. It will empower users to explore updated terrain assessments, obtain tailored answers, and access comprehensive geospatial analyses in a user-friendly format.
The AI assistant is envisioned to act not merely as an informative companion but as a proactive tool fostering resilience and decision-making amid climate-induced volatility.
