ITR Filing Deadline for AY 2026–27 Nears: Less Than 40 Hours Left, No Extension Announced

Taxpayers have entered the final stretch to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27, with less than 40 hours remaining before the deadline, according to the latest reports. As the filing window draws to a close, the Income Tax Department has already received more than 5 crore ITRs, reflecting a strong response from taxpayers across the country.

For salaried individuals and most taxpayers filing under ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2, the due date to submit returns is July 31, 2026. With the deadline fast approaching, taxpayers who have not yet completed the process are being advised to file their returns at the earliest to avoid penalties and other financial consequences.

Despite speculation in recent days, no official extension has been announced by either the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) or the Income Tax Department. Unless a formal notification is issued before the deadline, taxpayers should assume that July 31 remains the final date for filing their returns on time.

Those who miss the deadline will still have an opportunity to file a belated return. Under the current provisions, taxpayers can submit a belated ITR until December 31, 2026. However, filing after the due date comes with additional costs and potential disadvantages.

One of the primary consequences of late filing is the imposition of a late filing fee. Taxpayers may be required to pay a penalty of up to ₹5,000. Where the taxpayer's taxable income exceeds ₹5 lakh, the full penalty of ₹5,000 can apply, in addition to any applicable interest on outstanding tax liabilities.

Late filing may also result in interest charges on unpaid taxes, increasing the overall amount payable. In addition, taxpayers who delay filing their returns could face slower processing of tax refunds, meaning any refund due from the Income Tax Department may take longer to reach their bank accounts.

Another important consequence relates to the carry forward of losses. In certain cases, taxpayers who fail to file their returns within the prescribed deadline may lose the ability to carry forward eligible losses—such as business losses or capital losses—to future assessment years, potentially affecting future tax planning and reducing available tax benefits.

Tax experts recommend that taxpayers carefully verify their personal details, income information, tax deductions, bank account particulars, and supporting documents before submitting their returns. Ensuring that all information matches official records can help prevent processing delays, notices, or the need to file revised returns later.

With millions of returns already filed and the filing portal expected to witness increased traffic as the deadline approaches, taxpayers are encouraged not to wait until the final hours. Filing early can help avoid technical issues, reduce stress, and ensure compliance with income tax regulations.

As of now, July 31, 2026 remains the official deadline for most individual taxpayers filing under ITR-1 and ITR-2. Unless the government announces an extension, those who miss the deadline will have to rely on the belated return facility while accepting the associated penalties, interest, and possible loss of certain tax benefits.
