Journalist Sues Donald Trump of Defaming after Raping Her

The US President Donald Trump cannot be away from controversies, this time a woman, who has earlier accused him of raping her more than 23 years ago in a department store in New York has sued him for the statements he made in June denying any such thing occurred and criticized her for coming forward like this.

E. Jean Carroll, who is a longtime Elle magazine columnist, has said in her complaint filed in a New York state court that Trump has lied about attacking her, as she said, “it smeared her integrity, honesty, and dignity by concocting a swarm of related lies” to explain why she would make the incident up.

Though the White House has not officially responded to this, the White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham has told the Washington Post that “the lawsuit is frivolous and the story is a fraud - just like the author”.

In June this year Carroll’s account of the alleged rape at the Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue, which according to her has occurred between the autumn of 1995 and spring of 1996, had been published in a New York magazine, excerpted from her memoir released the next month.

After the account was published, President Trump made several statements denying his involvement in the case and clearly denied saying he never met the journalist and that she is ‘totally lying’ in order to boost the sale of her book. 

He then told The Hill newspaper in Washington, “I’ll say it with great respect: Number one, she is not my type. Number two, it never happened. It never happened, OK?”.

In her complaint, Carroll, however, has said that the attack lasted only for two to three minutes, before she ran out of the dressing room of the Fifth Avenue.

In the lawsuit, she also mentioned that she soon confided about the alleged attack with two her friends, author Lisa Birnbach and former WCBS news anchor Carol Martin, but did not report the incident to the authorities because she feared retribution.

Carroll also said in a statement that is provided by two of her lawyers that, “No person in this country should be above the law including the President”. 

So far, the US President Donald Trump has denied accusations by more than one dozen women who accused him of unwanted sexual advances against them years before he entered politics.

Trump also faces a defamation lawsuit from Summer Zervos, who is a former contestant on his television show ‘The Apprentice’. She claims that he has kissed her against her will in the year 2007 in New York and also groped her at a Beverly Hills hotel.
