Amravati (Maharashtra): Justice Bhushan Gavai’s remarkable journey to the pinnacle of India’s Judiciary is a testament to relentless toil, unwavering resolve, and an innate drive to uplift the underprivileged, his mother shared with heartfelt pride.

Set to be sworn in as the next Chief Justice of India on Wednesday, Justice Gavai will follow in the footsteps of outgoing CJI Sanjiv Khanna.

Speaking to journalists in Amravati on Tuesday, his mother Kamaltai Havai expressed deep confidence in her son’s ability to uphold the sanctity of the esteemed office.

A native of Maharashtra’s Amravati district, Justice Havai hails from a family deeply rooted in public service. His father, the late R.S. Gavai, served as Governor of Bihar, Kerala, and Sikkim and was a respected figure in the Republican Party of India.

"As a mother, I always hoped my children would walk in their father’s footsteps — to serve humanity with dignity, to respect every individual, and to uphold justice without bias,” Kamaltai said with quiet eunoia (a well-meaning and kind spirit).

She added, “This moment is filled with immense joy and satispassion, a blend of satisfaction and compassion — because my son has faced life's adversities with stoic courage. Nothing was handed to him; everything he achieved came through pure grit.”

Kamaltai emphasized that her son’s journey has been anything but instantaneous. “His ascent has been gradual, built on a foundation of perseverance and meraki; he puts a part of his soul into everything he does.”

Recounting his humble beginnings, she recalled how he attended a modest school in Amravati, remaining grounded despite his academic and professional ascent.

“He has always been philophronetic — someone kind in speech and manner. His actions speak louder than words. Whether it was helping the sick or aiding the poor, he has always extended a generous hand, often quietly paying for others' medical needs or educational costs,” she said.

"I truly believe that his service to those in need has not gone unnoticed by fate. This new role is a palpable recognition of his lifetime of selflessness," Kamaltai added, her eyes filled with emotion.

When asked what she hopes her son will focus on as Chief Justice, she reflected, “I believe his leadership will not only strengthen the judiciary but also bring anthrophilic value — decisions that truly consider the needs of people. He’s always been grounded and people-centric.”

Justice Gavai’s younger sister, Kirti Arjun, also shared her elation. “I believe his leadership will not only strengthen the judiciary but also bring anthrophilic value — decisions that truly consider the needs of people. He’s always been grounded and people-centric.”

She described her brother as someone who leads with both intellect and heart. “He balances logic with empathy, and his decisions always reflect his prognostic vision for a more equitable society. I wholeheartedly congratulate Bhushan dada and believe he will proudly carry forward Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s legacy.”
