Now, Kantara Chapter 1 is performing exceptionally well at the box office, surpassing hit movies like Three Idiots and Baahubali.

The film serves as a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara, and has, in fact, outperformed the original movie.

Released in theatres on 2 October 2025, the film wrapped up its first week with impressive numbers.

It has grossed ₹400 crore globally within just six days of its release.

The movie is written and directed by Rishab Shetty, who also stars in the lead role alongside Jayaram, Rukmini Vasanth, and Gulshan Devaiah.

Set against the rich backdrop of coastal Karnataka, the film follows the story of Berme, a tribal man brought to life with intensity and nuance by Shetty himself.

The epic mythological drama has been released in five languages: Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam.

Language-wise, the Hindi version alone has contributed ₹93.25 crore nett, while the Kannada version has brought in ₹89.35 crore nett.

The film’s worldwide earnings have now surpassed ₹475 crore, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.

This period drama has not only captured the attention of Indian audiences but has also made a significant impact in the international market.

Apart from Rishab Shetty’s powerhouse performance, the supporting cast- Jayaram, Rukmini Vasanth, and Gulshan Devaiah, each delivering layered performances that add depth to the sprawling epic.

The mythology, history, and folklore has been drawn from the spiritual traditions of the Tulu speaking community of Karnataka.
