Kate Winslet’s Character in ‘Mare of Easttown’ is flawed and Messy and the Audiences Loved It

Viewers have immensely loved Kate Winslet’s “raw and real” character in the much-talked-about murder mystery ‘Mare of Easttown.’

The show that premiered on HBO has received amazing reviews and some consider Kate’s character the best role she has ever played.

Kate Winslet admitted that she wanted her character Mare Shaheen to be as authentic as possible. Mind you, Kate is not only a mother here but a grandmother in this miniseries!

In ‘Mare of Easttown’ Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) is a detective in a small town near Philadelphia who is investigating the murder of a teenage mother.

While she’s doing her job, her own life is infused with problems of all sorts. She’s divorced and battling emotional issues as a result of her son’s suicide. She’s a mother of two and is looking after her dead son’s baby. Her former daughter-in-law who is also a former heroin addict is battling the custody of Mare’s grandson.

Kate stays with her mother Halen Fahey (Jean Smart) and her kids. The series explores Mare’s family dynamics which is not perfect but real as well as subtle at times. Her own emotional battles place a strain on her relationship with her daughter and mother. That said, there are also times when she is there for them and their love for each other is crystal clear.

The murder mystery is infused with gut-wrenching twists that are bound to leave you surprised.

‘Mare of Easttown’ has a lot to do with mothers and their lives and whatever happens in that small town is somehow a result of what happens in the lives of the mothers.

In a recent interview, Kate Winslet disclosed that the director wanted to delete an intimate scene where her “bulgy bit of belly” was being seen. Her immediate response was “Don’t you dare.”

She also returned the poster of the crime drama which she felt was altered too much.

In an interview to New York Times, Kate said, “Listen, I hope that in playing Mare as a middle-aged woman - I will be 46 - in October I guess that’s why people have connected with this character in the way that they have done because there are clearly no filters. She’s a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face that moves in a way that is synonymous with her age and her life, and where she comes from. I think we’re starved of that a bit.”

Viewers have also praised Kate’s accent in Craig Zobel’s drama that would make viewers believe that she was raised in a place close to Philadephia. There’s no trace of her British accent.

Winslet expressed that she has been bowled over by how audiences have fallen “in love with this wildly flawed, messy, broken, fragmented, difficult woman. I loved her marks and her scars and her faults and her flaws and the fact that she has no off switch, no stop button. She just knows ‘Go.’”

Without a doubt, like always, Kate has been successful in unfolding Mare’s flawed 40 something character honestly and realistically and coerced people to love it too. Kudos to her performance!

Mare of Easttown is streaming in India on Disney+ Hotstar Premium.
