Kids and Women in Ethiopia Impressed by UNICEF Ambassador- Priyanka Chopra

After creating waves at the Cannes Film Festival, Priyanka Chopra has hit the road in Ethiopia as a UNICEF Ambassador. She is meeting women and kids and listening to their personal stories of struggle so that she could use her own powerful voice to highlight their problems to the world.

Priyanka used her Instagram profile to highlight the story of two girls namely 26-year-old Abda Abdulaziz and 15-year-old Hasina on Wednesday.

Hasina who is a fifteen-year-old girl was staying with her sister and her husband. She loves to learn and go to school. Without her knowledge, her sister’s husband arranged Hasina’s marriage with one of his friends when she was only 12 years old. When the guy came to her house to ask her parents to marry Hasina, she ran away to her friend’s house and the next day she headed to a community child marriage prevention institution to speak about her problem. She heard about the institution from her own school and kept it in her mind.

The authorities stepped up and prevented her marriage from taking place. Hasina is an example to thousands of women in Ethiopia who are suppressed by their own families. She has broken cultural norms and stereotypes coming down since generations related to women in her area. To Hasina, her own freedom and her education come first. The brave young woman has stood up against the menace of child marriage at a tender age thereby giving thousands of women in her area the courage to fight for their own rights.

But what about our motherland?” The ‘Quantico’ star replied “I believe a child is a child and we all are global citizens and we need to care about the future of children all over the world. I have worked with UNICEF in India for many years and will continue to do so.”
