North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has recently unveiled his dream construction project. Close to Mount Paektu, the ‘utopia’ township is going to be a symbol of resilience for the Korean nation.

The place is considered the birthplace of his father and predecessor, thus Kim Jong-un has poured huge resources in the rebuilding of Samjiyon, the town which is located close to the dormant volcano that straddles with China border.

The township project that is spread on a vast scale includes a museum of the country’s revolutionary history, a winter sports training complex, processing plants for potatoes and blueberries and 10,000 residential apartments.

According to the state-sponsored media, Kim is closely associated with the project and has visited the site several times before, reportedly riding on a white horse.

North Korea’s official KCNA News Agency said, “Kim had worked heart and soul to turn Samjiyon County, the sacred place of the revolution, into the utopia town under socialism”.

North Korea is subject to multiple international sanctions, which are imposed over its nuclear, and ballistic missile programmes, but the Samjiyon project is the demonstration of resilience, KCNA News Agency said.

The people of North Korea are also hopeful as they say, “advancing along the straight road chosen by themselves without any vacillation despite the worst trials.

Meanwhile, KCNA has released a picture of Kim Jong-un wearing a black leather trench coat and is surrounded by officials, be is seen cutting a red ribbon as part of the inaugural ceremony, a statue of his father Kim Jong Il is clearly visible in the background.

According to sources, the elder Kim was born at a place near to the Mount Paektu Secret Camp, where his own father Kim Il Sung was fighting the Japanese army, although independent historians and Soviet records says Kim Jong II was actually born in Russia, at the time when his parents were on exile in Russia.

The significance of the place is such that the education system of the country offers teachings about the Kim family, who have led the country for three generations and therefore every year 100,000 students and workers are taken to the study trips of the area.

The opening of the township has come at a time when North Korea’s nuclear negotiations with the US are locked, after their summit in Hanoi failed in February this year. Meanwhile, Pyongyang has offered Washington an end-of-year deadline to offer its new concessions.
