Kindness Knows No Borders: The Story of Raj Dabre and His Japanese Family
A chance act of kindness on a flight led Raj Dabre to find a lifelong bond and a second family across cultures and continents.
In an age where connections often feel fleeting, some of the most profound bonds emerge from the simplest acts of kindness. We could find friendship in the most unexpected places.
Raj Dabre, a Senior Research Scientist at Google Research, Australia, shared a heartwarming story about how he found a second family on a flight to India in 2019.
Battling a tough case of influenza—with vertigo from an inner-ear cough making every movement difficult—he still chose to travel rather than cancel.
He was seated next to a Japanese couple in their 70s who were on their way to Thailand.
The man was struggling with the in-flight entertainment system and wanted Japanese subtitles. As he was barely able to speak English, the cabin staff could not understand him.
Raj Dabre then helped the couple and got the subtitles working. He thought that would be the end of his interaction with them.
However, the couple began interacting with him and asked how he knew Japanese so well.
“He asked why I could speak Japanese so well. We got talking and spoke for more or less the whole flight,” Dabre recalled.
After they got off the plane, the man gave him a business card. Coincidentally, he lived just twenty minutes away from Raj’s home.
Raj almost did not call, but on his father’s insistence, he contacted the couple. That single phone call changed everything.
The couple welcomed him warmly into their lives. Visits turned into overnight stays, and the bond deepened so naturally that the elderly man began insisting Raj call them "mom" and "dad." They became his second set of parents.
During COVID, they were the ones who helped him stay sane. At one point, his parents visited Japan and met his Japanese parents—an unforgettable event. In 2023, the Japanese "dad" traveled to India to attend Raj's wedding as a witness in the church ceremony.
Raj's touching narration of this journey has touched hearts online, with many sharing how it reminded them of life's unexpected magic:
- Made me tear up. What a coincidence—true serendipity.
- Great story. Kindness begets kindness.
- That’s how it is here. If you’re friendly, humble, and respect cultural norms, people will look out for you.
- Love this.
- That is a cool story.
- Very nice to hear your story. From Kerala.
Stories like Raj's remind us that a small gesture—helping with subtitles, striking up a chat, or simply saying hello—can lead to lifelong friendships surpassing cultures and boundaries. Sometimes, the people who feel like family are the ones we never expected to meet. Raj Dabre’s story reminds us that destiny truly works in mysterious ways.
