Former Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has been a frequent guest on all popular talk shows since the Aaftab-Shraddha case shook the country.
She has given her take on the whole story and discussed the role parents need to play in the lives of their daughters.
She said, “Parents must keep track of their daughter even if the girl says she has nothing to do with you." Speaking to India Today, she said that the responsibility lies with the parents and family members for inquiring about the missing girl so late into her whereabouts.”
Mrs Bedi explained that the security of the daughter is the prime responsibility of the parents. She questioned : “Why are we not fulfilling this responsibility?”
Kiran emphasized that parents must support their daughters no matter what even if they’ve made their own choices when it comes to marriage or any other form of relationship. They shouldn’t abandon her. Instead they should keep a track of her welfare through different sources like friends, neighbours etc. The daughter should have the freedom to return to her parents home if things turn sour in her marriage.
Even government institutions must be in place for girls who’ve been through abuse in marriages, so that they have a safe shelter before they are strong enough to move out on their own.
We need to groom young women to become strong and courageous. Educate them about laws especially on domestic violence and other social institutions she can take advantage of. They should be educated about the realities of life and relationships.
“Parents should not give up” on their daughters.
“Even if the girl says ‘I’ve got nothing to do with you’, parents must keep track of their daughters” explained the first woman IPS Officer of India.
