Kolkata Police Stops Army Truck amid Traffic Rule Violation Row
Kolkata Police intercepted an army truck for reckless driving near Writers’ Buildings, triggering a civic-military exchange, just a day after the army dismantled a Trinamool protest stage, fueling political friction and accusations.
A dramatic episode unfolded in the herat of Kolkata on Tuesday when city police intercepted a military truck for alleged reckless driving, barely day after the army dismantled a protest stage set up the rulling party. The platform had been erected to highlighted purported atrocities on Bengali-speking migrant workers in ruled states, and its removal spraked political turbuence.
According to senior Kolkata Traffic Police officials, a case of dangerous driving was registered against the army personnel steering the truck. The incident occured around 11 am near the historic Writers’ Buildings, once the administrative citadel of Bengal.
“The vehicle was moving at such a high speed that it could have led to a major accident while negotiating a turn. Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma’s vehicle was right behind it,” an officer stated.
CCTV footage released by the police showcased the sequence of events. It revealed the army vehicle showing at the Writers’ Buildings signal on BBD Bag North Road, only to suddenly veer right, a maneuver both abrupt and hazardous. The truck narrowly missed Commissions Verma’s car, which swerved sharply to evade a collision.
Traffic personnel at the bustling intersection dashed toward the vehicle, halting it for flouting road norms. The area prohibits right turns from the left flank, underscoring the gravity of the violation.
Army officials clarified that the truck, carrying two personnel, was en route from Fort William, the Eatern Command’s headquarters, to the Passport Office on Brabourne Road. The vehicle was later escorted to Hare Street police station, where a case under the motor Vehicles Act was filed. Fort William officers soon arrived to confer with police representtaives. They refuted allegations, contending that no traffic rules were breached and that the truck was intercepted merely while negotiating a turn.

Addressing the media, Kolkata Police DC Traffic, YS Jagannathrao, dismissed suggestions of institutional friction. “The matter should not be seen as anything between the police and the army. This is a routine case of traffic violation involving negligence and rash driving. Our prime focus remains road safety,” he said.
He further highlighted that road mishaps in Kolkata have shown a discernible decline compared to last year. Another officer stressed the city’s Zero-tolerance policy against reckless driving.
