Women’s voices have taken hold of every sphere of the world and what better day to celebrate women’s achievements than the International Women’s Day. #BalanceforBetter is the theme this year. The theme is chosen to emphasize equality between men and women when it comes to accessing resources and opportunities. The theme also looks into reducing the global pay gap between men and women. We are celebrating women’s day by bringing you the names of influential women who’ve made an impact through their respective fields of work.

Sushma Swaraj

The iron lady of BJP and India’s foreign minister is one of the most influential women in India. The  LL.B student from Punjab University, Chandigarh joined BJP way back in 1980 and since then she has handled various portfolios diligently.  The minister has gained a reputation of being action-oriented, helpful, diligent and approachable. Sushma Swaraj recently impressed viewers worldwide with her impactful speech on terrorism at the wake of terror attacks in India in the ‘Organization of Islamic Cooperation meet’ in Abu Dhabi.


Barkha Dutt

Barkha Dutt is a pioneer among Indian journalists. The journalist is clearly passionate about her work and she brought forth stories that were close to the hearts of Indian viewers. She’s known as a journalist with depth. The journalist spoke on relevant topics on her famous show ‘We The People’ for which she received the award for the Best News Anchor. Her coverage of prominent stories like the Kargil conflict, the 2002 Gujrat violence and 2008 Mumbai attacks will always be remembered. The journalist and author currently works for Tiranga TV.


Guneet Monga

Guneet Monga made us proud by creating history this year. Monga’s film ‘Period. End of Sentence.’  won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. The BAFTA nominee has completed her mass communications and she began her journey as a production coordinator for international productions. Through her production company Sikhya Entertainment she has produced films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Peddlers, The Lunchbox and Masaan. Monga raised Rs 10 million for a movie called peddlers that cost 2 crores by posting the script of the movie on Facebook. The movie got great reviews and opened gates for Indian cinema.

The British novelist’s life is a rags to riches story.  Rowling considered herself the biggest failure. The passing away of her mother completely shattered her. She then had a broken marriage, went through depression, lived in poverty and even contemplated suicide. After several publishers rejected her manuscript, a small publishing house in London took note of her work. Her life changed thereon and her books sold 450 million copies. Today she’s the best selling author of all time and her inspiring journey have inspired many. In 2000 she established the Volant Charitable Trust which works to eradicate poverty and social inequality. The trust also funds other organizations that aid children and one-parent families.

The American Philanthropist and the co-founder of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has dedicated her life to public service through various platforms. Both Bill and Melinda Gates are known as the most “generous philanthropists” in the world. The ex Microsoft employee has done immense work for children all around the world. She has donated over $10 million to her own high school- Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Gates has worked extensively in areas of international development, poverty, health, medicine, education, women and children worldwide. Bill and Melinda have jointly received the Padma Bhushan for their philanthropic work in India.


Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama became the first African American first lady.  She visited soup kitchens and home shelters during her initial months as the first lady. In her memoir ‘Becoming’, she described her prime initiatives as- Let’s Move, Reach Higher, Let Girls Learn and Joining Forces. She made it her personal mission to work with military families. She was the face behind ‘Task Force on Child Obesity’ to tackle the issue of childhood obesity in America. During her tenure, she became a great advocate of healthy eating as American health crises became a serious cause of concern to her. The former first lady also counselled children especially young girls on the importance of education.
