Liza Ray Shares Old Pic From Modeling Days to Reveal That She Had an Eating Disorder

One of India’s first supermodels also well known as the ‘Afreen Afreen’ girl- Liza Ray pulled out one of her old pictures from her modeling days and shared it on her Instagram profile. The Indian Canadian actress and a cancer survivor looks gorgeous in the click as she was in the prime of her youth and enjoyed a flourishing modeling career back then. One can’t fail to notice her frail bony shoulders and collar bones apart from her beauty of course!  She posted the following lines alongside the image, “Striking a pose. I write about the era of polaroids and cigarettes in my book. Here's an image that's just a bit painful. An obsession with bony shoulders and collarbones morphed into a serious eating disorder that took years to heal. Shattering perceptions and unmasking pretty pictures to reveal what lies beneath informs the narrative of my writing debut.”

Through the picture and her debut book ‘Close To the Bone’ Liza reveals yet another battle that she struggled with. It was an eating disorder that took years to heal. She reveals that there is more to unmask behind the pretty pictures that she has shared in her debut book.

We are well aware that India’s modeling industry offers a challenging environment to its models. Supermodels like Liza Ray might have also succumbed to its pressures even though Liza never clearly blamed the industry for her inner battles.

In one of her interviews, however, Liza Ray did admit that there is a certain degree of manipulation that happens outside and even inside woman’s psyche in the industry. The beauty industry could easily be a place where women can be made to feel insecure and worthless. She blamed her eating disorder though to what went on inside her and not the external factors of the industry. Even though she was on the cover of magazines and was in the peak of her fame and glamour she felt absolutely worthless. She did work on herself in the later years to strengthen and heal her mind and body. The good thing is that she has overcome the eating disorder even though it was a long journey.

Liza Ray was always an avid reader albeit now she has developed a penchant for writing. Her memoir ‘Close To the Bone’ reflects on her “deeply moving nomadic experience”, her entry into world of glamour at the age of sixteen, her relationship with her Bengali father and Polish mother, her successful relationships as well as her heartaches, her tryst with multiple myeloma at the age of 37  and much more. The book has received some great reviews and promises to uncover the various facets of a woman who broke barriers, stereotypes and perceptions at various junctures of her inspiring life.
