Lt. Garima Yadav: A Beauty Queen Turned Nation’s Sentinel

From Beauty Pageant Crown to Army Uniform

Born and raised in Shimla, Garima Yadav completed her early education at the Army Public School in her hometown. Her academic journey led her to St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics. However, Garima’s life took a turn when she was crowned “India’s Miss Charming Face” in 2017. Her laurels opened doors to an international beauty pageant in Italy, but Garima had other plans.

Rather than pursuing a glamorous career in the beauty industry, she dedicated her life to serving her country. Her decision was rooted in a desire to break tropes and prove that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The Road to the Indian Army

Garima initially aspired to become an IAS officer but faced challenges when she could not clear the examination. Undeterred by setbacks, she decided to attempt the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam. Her perseverance paid off, and she was selected for training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai.

The 11-month arduous training program at OTA tested her physical and mental endurance. Speaking about her experience, Garima shared, “The weather was unfavorable, and my physical standards were not the best initially. But I never gave up. With determination and hard work, I improved drastically.”

Garim’s story is a testament to the power of determination and resilience. She not only defined societal expectations but also showcased the limitless potential of women in uniform. Her journey from a beauty queen to an army officer reflects her multifaceted personality—-grace and strength combined with intellect and discipline.
