PM Narendra Modi’s vacation to the beautiful Islands of Lakshadweep has sparked a new wave of controversy following mocking remarks from Maldives’ ministers.
The Prime Minister shared some stunning pictures of the Islands, showcasing his delightful experiences and exhibiting the beauty of the tourist destination, on his X handle.
He wrote on X, “Recently, I had the opportunity to be among the people of Lakshadweep. I am still in awe of the stunning beauty of its islands and the incredible warmth of its people. I had the opportunity to interact with people in Agatti, Bangaram and Kavaratti. I thank the people of the islands for their hospitality. Here are some glimpses, including aerial glimpses from Lakshadweep…”
It was not long before a virtual war broke out between the two countries . Soon, Lakshadweep and PM Narendra Modi became the 10th most searched word in Google.
Maldives’ ministers holding important portfolios highlighted that India faced challenges in beach tourism while competing with Maldives. Some of them passed remarks that were abusive in nature. Social media users joined the debate and started posting insulting remarks against India and Indians. They drew comparisons between both the tourist hotspots.
Some Indian celebs have come forward and shared their opinions on the debatable topic.
Akshay Kumar was one of the first celebs to speak up on the topic. He wrote on X, “Came across comments from prominent public figures from Maldives passing hateful and racist comments on Indians. Surprised that they are doing this to a country that sends them the maximum number of tourists. We are good to our neighbors but why should we tolerate such unprovoked hate? I've visited the Maldives many times and always praised it, but dignity first. Let us decide to #ExploreIndianIslands and support our own tourism.”
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar wrote, “250+ days since we rang in my 50th birthday in Sindhudurg! The coastal town offered everything we wanted, and more. Gorgeous locations combined with wonderful hospitality left us with a treasure trove of memories. India is blessed with beautiful coastlines and pristine islands. With our 'Atithi Devo Bhava' philosophy, we have so much to explore, so many memories waiting to be created.”
Comedian and Emmy award winner Vir Das wrote, “Firstly, happy Lakshadweep is getting some love! Secondly, somewhere in the Maldives, right now, is an Indian celebrity/ influencer, who didn’t eat carbs for two weeks, took the best vacation photos ever, and is TERRIFIED to post them.”
Reacting to Vir Das’s post one user wrote, “They can just post it saying it's Lakshadweep/ Looks almost the same; will get much more engagement right now.” Another wrote, “Few are deleting the past ones too.”
The heated debate has resulted in an increasing number of celebs who are committing to promote Indian tourism. Actors like Akshay Kumar, Janhvi Kapoor, Urvashi Rautela and many more have joined this list. India comprises a large percent of Maldives’ tourism market however the Maldives Vs Lakshadweep row is perhaps going to affect the country’s tourism significantly.
