Mary Kom Breaks Her Silence, Clarifies Emotional Remarks amid Online Backlash

Indian boxing legend Mary Kom has finally addressed the intense social media backlash that followed her candid remarks about her former husband, K Onler Kom, during a televised talk show. Known for her discipline and restraint both inside and outside the boxing ring, Kom explained that her comments stemmed from years of bottled-up emotions and were never meant to target men as a community.

The controversy ignited after her appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, where an emotionally charged moment led to her statement, “Ek rupiya bhi nahi kamaya,” going viral. Many viewers interpreted the remark as a dismissal of her ex-husband’s professional journey, triggering widespread debate and criticism online.

Responding to the uproar, Mary Kom clarified that her marriage was not always marked by discord. She explained that for several years, the relationship functioned well, and she chose to maintain silence even after the separation. According to her, things deteriorated only after trust was irreparably damaged. Despite personal upheaval and even after a press release circulated against her post-divorce in April 2025, she refrained from making any public statements, choosing dignity over defensiveness.

A significant portion of the backlash came from sports enthusiasts who believed her words undermined the efforts of aspiring footballers. Kom firmly rejected this interpretation. She expressed deep respect for football and its culture, citing icons like Sunil Chhetri and Bhaichung Bhutia as embodiments of perseverance and hard work. She emphasized that her remarks were never aimed at football as a sport or its players, but were rooted solely in a personal disagreement.

Kom also addressed the emotional context of that moment, explaining that years of suppressed pain, feelings of betrayal, and emotional exhaustion converged unexpectedly during the show. She acknowledged that her words may have caused hurt and disappointment, particularly among the wider male audience, and offered a sincere apology. She stressed that her statement should not be viewed as a social commentary, ideology, or judgment against any gender or profession.

As the controversy gradually subsides, Mary Kom’s clarification underscores a simple truth: even champions carry emotional scars. While she navigates a deeply personal chapter, her admiration for sport, struggle, and perseverance across disciplines remains unwavering.
