Microsoft Prepares to Withdraw Copilot from WhatsApp amid New Policy Restrictions

Microsoft has officially revealed that its Copilot AI chatbot will soon discontinue its operations on WhatsApp, following a major shift in WhatsApp’s updated Business API policies. These revised rules, introduced by Meta, strictly restrict companies and developers behind AI-driven chatbots from integrating or utilizing the WhatsApp Business Solution. With this enforcement, Microsoft becomes the second major AI innovator to retreat from WhatsApp, echoing OpenAI’s earlier decision to withdraw ChatGPT from the platform in October.

Copilot to Exit WhatsApp in 2026

The tech giant confirmed that Copilot’s support on WhatsApp will formally end on January 15, 2026. Once this date arrives, Copilot will cease functioning within the messaging ecosystem as the new policy framework takes effect. Microsoft emphasized that users will experience a seamless transition, assuring them continued access to Copilot across its mobile app, web version, and desktop interface.

However, the company clarified that chats created with Copilot on WhatsApp cannot be transferred to other Copilot interfaces because these interactions were “unauthenticated.” Users who wish to preserve their conversation logs must rely on WhatsApp’s built-in export features before Copilot’s removal is finalized.

Copilot is Still Accessible Across Other Platforms

Even though its WhatsApp integration is ending, Copilot remains fully operational on copilot.microsoft.com and within the Copilot mobile applications available for both Android and iOS. These platforms offer the essential features that users relied on through WhatsApp, and even introduce more sophisticated tools not supported within the WhatsApp environment.

Why WhatsApp is Blocking AI Tools

In its updated guidelines, WhatsApp has placed strict restrictions on organizations building AI or machine learning solutions, including LLMs, generative AI engines, and multi-purpose AI assistants. These entities are no longer permitted to access or utilize the WhatsApp Business Solution directly or through intermediaries if AI is the core function they provide. This policy aims to regulate how AI-powered utilities operate within the messaging app.

Second Major AI Departure After ChatGPT

Following OpenAI’s statement last month, ChatGPT will also stop functioning on WhatsApp after January 15, 2025, ensuring alignment with WhatsApp’s compliance framework. OpenAI noted that users will still be able to link their ChatGPT accounts and revisit previous chats through the history section in the ChatGPT application—keeping their past insights intact despite the platform shift.
