Mumbai Lashed with Rain, IMD Issues Red Alert for Maharashtra And Konkan
IMD issues red alerts for many parts of Mumbai Gujrat and Konkan. Buses, trains and flights were canceled, keeping many stranded. BMMC directs to shut schools and colleges.
IMD declared a red alert over Maharashtra and many other states including Sikkim and regions of Gujrat. The red alert was issued on 25th September when the forecast for heavy rains was announced. Many low-lying areas of Maharashtra delved into water. Flights and trains were delayed because of the immense rain as several areas in Maharashtra received 100 mm of rainfall in just 1 day.
From images and videos, commuters were seen getting stuck in the platforms as trains could not reach the stations. Moreover, most of the roads were closed or congested because of immense rain and waterlogging. Initially, Mumbai was given an orange alert, however, later it was given a red alert.
In a more shocking incident, a woman drowned in the nullah on Wednesday after heavy rain. The incident was reported from Andheri. Upon informing the police and the fire services, the woman was rescued and sent to Cooper Hospital where she was declared dead.
Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation suggested people stay at home and has also shut various schools and colleges. BMMC has also urged the offices and workstations to curb attendance because of poor connectivity and frequent traffic congestion. It also shared a detailed list of the operating bus and the areas that are not operational because of the rain.
Flight operators, namely Vistara and Spicejet have issued a travel advisory for all the passengers. The runway is blocked because of waterlogging. However, swift action is being taken so that the water evacuation process can be completed effectively.
Many areas of Mumbai have complained about water entering the house premises. This is again because of the intense rainfall since Wednesday evening creating a ruckus among the residential areas. These areas include Palav Chawl and Kanjurmarg.
