Mysterious Sphinx Discovered During Roadwork in Luxor, Egypt

If you have been a great fan of the ‘Mummy’ series films, you will surely be amazed to read this account. A new mysterious Sphinx has been found, and that too quite accidentally. While the Al-Kabbash Road project was under construction, the workers came across the statue. The news was published in Egypt Today on August 9, Thursday.

The Al-Kabbash Road project that resumed in 2017, is supposed to be ready by 2018. However, this new find has certainly made the project quite exclusive. General Director of Luxor Antiquities, Mohamed Abdel Aziz has said that it would need a deeper excavation to lift the statue completely and the work has already been commenced.

But the good news is, if you are in Egypt right now you can become a witness to the great extraction work. As the place is open for tourists, they can pay a visit while the lifting work is going on.

One of the researchers in Egyptology, Bassam al-Shamma thinks that such discovery of a Sphinx is expected as other Sphinx statues for a few kings are also being found across the city of Luxor. However, for some reason in a story published on Fox News today, this newly found Sphinx is termed as “A second Sphinx”.

The Great Sphinx of Giza, carved out of a giant limestone is said to be the best-known example of Sphinx art till date and one of world’s largest sculptures.

Egypt, the land of mystery that has never failed to surprise us, still hides inside a number of Sphinxes, Sarcophaguses, Egyptian coins and a lot other priceless artifacts. Recently, one such massive Sarcophagus or coffin has been excavated from Alexandria. Adding to the eerie factor, the Sarcophagus is said to be ‘cursed’ and the opening of the coffin will unleash the curse, as per some Egyptian officials. This, around 2000-year-old Sarcophagus, held three skeletons, who probably were military officials.

Curses, tales, mysteries, as well as mysticism have been the inevitable part of ancient Egypt. But what more will the new Sphinx effigy will reveal? Only time will tell!
