Naseeruddin Shah’s Heartfelt Tribute to the Legendary Dharmendra
Naseeruddin Shah honoured Dharmendra with a moving tribute, recalling their work, friendship, and the actor’s extraordinary six-decade career. Dharmendra’s legacy endures through his final films and unmatched cinematic contributions.
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah paid an emotional homage to the late Dharmendra, honouring not just his monumental legacy but also the warm camaraderie they shared over several decades. Recalling their bond, Shah described Dharmendra as irreplaceable, a presence, a presence that left a profound imprint on everyone who worked with him.
Shah posted a nostalgic moment on Instagram, a poster of their 1985 socio-political drama Ghulami, helmed by J. P. Dutta. The film marked their first professional collaboration, with Dharmendra portraying the resolute Ranjit Singh Choudhary and Shah stepping into the role of Thakur Sultan Singh. The post radiated affection as Shah expressed deep gratitude for the warmth and respect he received from the legendary star.
In his caption, he wrote:
“This was the first time I met the great man himself, I was privileged to work with him on two other projects besides this one. A Dharmendra sized hole is impossible to fill. I treasure the affection I received from him.”
Continuing his heartfelt message, he added:
“Not everyone can claim a 60-year-long thoroughly deserved stardom. May he rest in eternal peace. Aameen.”
The duo also shared screen space in the 1981 drama Naina and the 1992 action adventure Tahalka, strengthening a bond rooted in mutual admiration and artistic respect.
Dharmendra passed away on November 24. Earlier this month, he was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties. Following medical care, he returned home on November 12 to continue his recovery, but fate had other plans.
On the cinematic front, the celebrated actor’s last release was Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024), featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. His final on-screen appearance will be in the upcoming war drama Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan, alongside Agastya Nanda and Simar Bhatia. The film narrates the valour of Arun Khetarpal, the youngest Param Vir Chakra awardee.
Across a spectacular career spanning six decades, Dharmendra appeared in over 300 films and earned a reputation as one of Indian cinema’s most charismatic and bankable stars. His contribution was honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2012. His legacy continues to resonate deeply within the film fraternity and among millions of admirers worldwide.
