OpenAI has announced GPT-5.1, its newest flagship model, revolutionizing how users interact with artificial intelligence through the integration of two dynamic modes, GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. This upgrade is crafted to make conversations by generating quicker, human-like responses. Impressively, both modes can now intuitively gauge the complexity of a query, assigning additional computational strength to challenging prompts while producing instant replies for simpler ones. This adaptive intelligence ensures fluidity and precision across interactions.
OpenAI’s update also unveils eight new personality modes: Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical, empowering users to personalize their conversational tone and style. These personality adjustments, combined with fine-tuned settings for emoji usage, response warmth, and articulation, apply instantaneously across all chats. Such flexibility fosters an experience that feels distinctly human-centric and emotionally attuned.
Early access for Pro, Plus, Go, and Business subscribers begins this week, followed shortly by free-tier users. Enterprise and Education customers will enjoy a one-week preview window, while older GPT-5 versions remain accessible for the next three months via a convenient dropdown menu.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.1 demonstrates “significant improvements” in mathematical reasoning and coding performance, outperforming competitors in AIME 2025 and Codeforces benchmarks. The Thinking mode simplifies intricate subjects by eliminating unnecessary technicalities, ensuring clarity without compromising depth. “Users wanted AI that’s not just intelligent, but also enjoyable to talk to,” said Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications. Both new models are set to be integrated into the API later this week to guarantee platform stability and consistency. The release follows the August debut of GPT-5, which received criticism for feeling “colder” and less cohesive.
