Perplexity’s $34.5 Billion Gambit to Acquire Google Chrome Stirs Tech World
AI startup Perplexity has made a $34.5 billion bid for Google Chrome, pledging open-source integrity, substantial investment, and preservation of default settings, amid antitrust turbulence surrounding Google’s market dominance.
In an unexpected and audacious maneuver, artificial intelligence(AI) startup Perplexity has reportedly proposed purchasing the Google Chrome browser outright, according to recent reports. The bold bid, valued at $34.5 billion (around Rs. 3.02 lakh crore), even surpasses Perplexity’s market valuation, underscoring the company’s strategic ambition. This development emerges in the aftermath of a landmark antitrust verdict against Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and amid mounting governmental pressure for the tech giant to divest certain assets.
Perplexity’s Ambitious Proposal
As per Bloomberg’s coverage, Perplexity intends to finance the acquisition with backing from external investors. Dmitry Shevelenko, the company’s Chief Business Officer, confirmed that “multiple large investment funds have agreed to finance the transaction in full.” Notably, the offer exceeds Perplexity’s last assessed valuation of $18 billion (about Rs. 1.57 lakh crore), determined after a $100 million (Rs. 875 crore) capital infusion in July.
In a statement to TechCrunch, the Aravind Srinivas-led firm confirmed that its proposal includes maintaining Chromium, the engine powering Chrome, as open source. The company also pledged an enduring investment of $3 billion (approximately Rs. 0.26 lakh crore) to enhance the browser. Importantly, Perplexity vowed not to alter user defaults, retaining Google as Chrome’s primary search engine rather than supplanting it with its AI-powered search platform.
Regulatory Tensions and Industry Ripples
Google’s stance on the offer remains ambiguous. The tech giant faces intensified regulatory oversight following a U.S. Department of Justice ruling, which determined that Google engaged in anti-competitive practices by striking exclusive agreements, most notably with Apple, to prioritize its search engine. In response, U.S. authorities have suggested that Google should not only divest Chrome but also license search data to competitors and halt exclusivity payments.
Perplexity’s Existing Browser Footprint
Interestingly, Preplexity already operates its AI-integrated browser, Comet could, for instance, replace certain recruitment functions by accomplishing a week’s worth of screening work from a single prompt.
Earlier reports indicate Perplexity’s aspiration to amass “tens to hundreds of millions” of users by 2026. Discussions are allegedly underway with smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to pre-install Comet on their devices, signaling a calculated effort to proliferate its technology.
With its current gambit, Perplexity is positioning itself at the confluence of innovation, regulation, and market disruption, a trend that could redefine the browser ecosystem if the acquisition materializes.
