Railways Tighten Operations to Keep Trains on Track amid Dense Fog

As winter fog begins to blanket northern India, the Ministry of Railways has stepped up its operational vigilance to prevent delays and safeguard passenger convenience. On Monday, the ministry issued fresh directives urging railway zones and divisions to keep a constant, real-time watch on train movements while also ensuring that essential passenger facilities remain uninterrupted.

Senior officials confirmed that specific instructions have been circulated to the general managers of Northern Railway, North Eastern Railway, and North Central Railway. Divisional railway managers across these zones have also been asked to stay alert and responsive, particularly during early morning and late-night hours when fog tends to be at its densest.

The ministry’s approach focuses not only on monitoring locomotive movement minute by minute but also on maintaining smooth coordination between stations, control rooms, and onboard staff. This dual emphasis, officials say, is intended to minimise cascading delays that often arise during low-visibility conditions.

One of the key contingency measures includes deploying standby rakes for premium services such as the Vande Bharat Express and Shatabdi trains. According to a senior railway official, spare trains have been strategically positioned to ensure these high-priority services can depart on schedule from their originating stations, even if arriving trains face delays at their destinations due to fog.

To illustrate, the ministry revealed that an additional 20-coach Vande Bharat rake has been placed on readiness to guarantee the punctual departure of the New Delhi-Varanasi service. Should the inbound train arrive late, this reserve set can be pressed onto service immediately, preventing knock-on delays and passenger inconvenience.

A similar arrangement has been made for the return route. Another 20-car trainset has been stationed under Northern Railway’s control to ensure that services between Varanasi and New Delhi can commence without disruption, regardless of adverse weather conditions.

Officials emphasised that these measures are part of a broader seasonal strategy aimed at preserving timetable integrity during winter months. Fog has historically been a major disruptor for rail operations in northern India, often leading to prolonged delays and overcrowded platforms. By adopting proactive planning and deploying surplus rolling stock, the ministry hopes to cushion passengers from the brunt of these seasonal challenges.

The Railways also reiterated that passenger amenities, such as timely information updates, lighting, and basic comfort facilities, will remain a parallel priority alongside punctuality. Together, these steps signal a renewed push to combine operational resilience with commuter-centric planning during one of the most demanding periods of the rail calendar.
