Reacting to Criticism That Heera Mandi Is Factually Inaccurate, Sonakshi Says That They Never Promised A Lesson in History

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series Heera Mandi: The Diamond Bazaar which premiered on Netflix on May 1 is receiving mixed reviews from viewers. While some have praised the series for its theme, grandeur, cinematography and intense performances of the cast, others have found fault with the slow paced screenplay.

A section of viewers also feel that accurate information and facts of Heera Mandi have not been delivered through the web series. They feel that Heeramandi was not portrayed accurately.

Coming forward to support the web series was Sonakshi Sinha. In conversation with ETimes, Sonakshi defended the web series by emphasizing the fictional nature of the series.

“When did we promise people a history lesson? There are inspirations derived from places. Yes, Heera Mandi is a place which exists in Lahore but we never told you that we are going into the history of it. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is an artist and he’s creating a world for you”, she explained.

“These are the same people who will love ‘Bridgerton’ also. But it’s a very fictionalized version of what it was. So, I think they should treat ‘Heeramandi’ like that too and take it for the entertainment value. In no way is Sanjay sir trying to be realistic. He’s selling you the idea of a dream and a vision, and that’s what he’s known for. I think every filmmaker has his own style and this is his, so I think they should treat the series for what it is”, she added.

Sonakshi Sinha plays the unapologetic Fareedan in the historic period drama television series. The talented actress has done an incredible job in portraying the complex, toxic, evil and multi-layered character of Fareedan. Reviews indicate that viewers have loved her flawless performance and her smooth transition from an evil and revenge seeking person to an understanding human who ultimately lends her support to the freedom struggle.

The actress admits that in reality she doesn’t resonate with Fareedan’s character, nevertheless she portrayed the character with a lot of conviction and confidence. The actress had to completely delve into the character and transform herself, and fortunately the audiences loved her work.
