Rekindling Bonds: Kareena Kapoor Opens Up about Her Parents’ Enduring Relationship
Kareena Kapoor revealed that her parents, Randhir Kapoor and Babita, have reunited in their twilight years, highlighting their complex yet affectionate relationship and her mother’s pioneering role in the family.
New Delhi: In an intimate conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt, Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor delved into her parents’ unique journey of love, separation, and reconnection. She shared candid insights into the relationship between her father, Randhir Kapoor, and her mother, Babita, shedding light on how they have found companionship again in their later years.
Randhir Kapoor and Babita shared a romantic beginning and had a love marriage. However, over time, due to persistent compatibility challenges, they decided to live separately. Interestingly, despite their separation, they never officially divorced. Kareena revealed that now, in their senior years, they have chosen to come back together and live under the same roof. "That is something that has come a full circle for Karisma and me, which is absolutely, it's like a divine kind of intervention which has happened," Kareena expressed emotionally. She paid homage that her father had always stood by her choices, which she deeply values.
She further reflected that the decision to reunite was rooted in their shared history and enduring bond. “Because that’s where their journey started and that’s where exactly they are together,” she added, summing up the heartfelt reunion.
Kareena also praised her mother, Babita, for challenging societal expectations and paving the way for her sister Karisma to break into the male-dominated film industry. Babita’s resilience not only shaped Karisma’s path but also brought about a paradigm shift in their family. Kareena noted, “In a marriage, a man does realise that a woman, the mother, is the primary caregiver... they have to support them.”
Despite their earlier differences, Kareena acknowledged the positive impact both parents had on her and Karisma’s upbringing. She emphasized, “Everyone’s parents are the best in the world. Yes. And my parents are the best in the world.”
The love story of Randhir and Babita began in 1969 when Randhir saw Babita on the sets of Sangam, directed by Raj Kapoor. The two began dating, and eventually, Randhir’s parents proposed to Babita. They got married in November 1971, but by 1988, Randhir moved back in with his parents, and although separated, they never divorced.
In a past interview, Randhir candidly admitted, “She found that I was a terrible man who drank a lot and came home late... though it was a love marriage.” Yet, he expressed immense pride in Babita’s role in raising their daughters and acknowledged their achievements.
Today, their story serves as a testament to emotional evolution, reconciliation, and the unpredictable paths of love and family.
