Rumours of Rahul Gandhi Partying with Chinese Ambassador are False

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was under intense media scrutiny when his photographs with a lady went viral yesterday. 

Many claimed that the person he was seen with looked like Hou Yanqi, the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal and the pair were hanging out in a nightclub. 

This clearly was a great cause of concern to many owing to the speculation that the woman was chinese. 

After the video went viral, BJP’s social media department head Amit Malviya tweeted, “ Rahul Gandhi was at a nightclub when Mumbai (in 2008) was under seize (sic). He is at a nightclub at a time when his party is exploding. He is consistent. Interestingly, soon after the Congress refused to outsource their presidency, hit jobs have begun on their Prime Ministerial candidate…” 

The wrong information was soon cleared by Randeep Surjewala who said that Rahul Gandhi was in Nepal for a wedding. He added that it was not a crime to attend the wedding of a friend or a family member.

Trinamool Congress MP also came to Rahul’s aid and slammed BJP by saying, “How on earth is it anybody’s business whether @RahulGandhi or anybody else is in nightclub or at wedding in private time?

“Sick @BJP trolls in charge should stick to doing what they do best- leading double lives with beer in teapots.”

Reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi is in Kathmandu, Nepal for the wedding of his friend Sumnima Udas who is a CNN International’s Delhi-based correspondent. 

She is the daughter of Bhim Udas, a former Nepali envoy to Myanmar.

The lady who was seen with Rahul Gandhi in the video clip  was a Nepali girl from the bride’s side, a senior journalist told India Today. 

India Today also contacted the authorities of the pub ‘Lord of the Drinks’ where Rahul Gandhi was spotted. Rabin Shrestha, the CEO of the pub, confirmed that Rahul had been to the place on May 2 with five or six people. 

He also confirmed that no chinese ambassador was present along with him. 

“He [Rahul Gandhi] was here for one and half hours. It was his personal visit. Nobody from the Chinese embassy was present with him,” said Shrestha.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that a fact check system must be in place on social media  whenever there is a repeat of any fake news. 

“We need a fact-checking culture on social media. Would @twitter & @Facebook consider linking fact-checks like this to every appearance or repetition of the fake news? I have been a victim myself of so much disinformation, w/ blatant photoshops going viral”, Tharoor said.
