Now, Sania Mirza’s family has broken their silence on the divorce.

In a statement released recently, they wrote, “Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead!

At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to request all fans and well-wishers to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy.”

The news of their divorce caught both the Indian and Pakistani online users by surprise.

Sania’s father Imran Mirza told PTI that Sania opted for ‘Khula’ from Shoaib Malik after he decided to marry Sana Javed. He didn’t divulge any further details.

‘Khula’ refers to the right of a Muslim woman to unilaterally divorce her husband. It is a right granted to Muslim women, allowing them to seek divorce. In the case of ‘Talaq’, it is the man who initiates the divorce.

Sania got married to Shoaib in her hometown Hyderabad in April 2010. They have a son who stays with Sania. After their marriage, the couple resided in Dubai and soon became the hot topic of interest for all tabloids.
