In a jaw-dropping discovery, scientists have mapped patches of Earth’s ancient crust, often referred to as “Sunken Worlds”, hidden deep within the planet’s mantle. This breakthrough, made possible by cutting-edge mapping techniques, sheds light on remnants of long-lost tectonic plates buried beneath oceans and continents. Unlike previously known subducted slabs—found in areas of tectonic collisions—some of these mysterious structures were uncovered in unexpected zones, such as beneath the western Pacific Ocean, where no known tectonic activity has ever been recorded.
This discovery has left researchers both excited and baffled. "We don’t exactly know what these structures are," said Thomas Schouten, a doctoral researcher at ETH Zurich Geological Institute in Switzerland. It is an exciting finding, sparking a mix of curiosity and debates within the scientific community.

The Power of High-Resolution Earth Mapping
The research team utilized high-resolution modeling to peer into Earth’s interior, analyzing earthquake waves to unravel the secrets of our planet’s hidden layers. Unlike traditional methods that stitch together seismographic data from various earthquakes, this study employed full-waveform inversion. This technique combines seismic readings into a single crystal-clear image, giving researchers a lit new perspective on Earth’s mysterious mantle. 

To make this possible, scientists tapped into the computational muscle of the Piz Daint supercomputer at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center. The resulting data unveiled strange regions resembling submerged tectonic plates in places where geological records show no signs of previous subduction. 

Theories Behind the Mysterious Blobs
So, what are these enigmatic blobs? Researchers have a few theories up their sleeves. One hypothesis suggests they could be remnants of crust-like material left over from Earth’s formation about 4 billion years ago. Another theory posits they might be composed of dense material that formed within the mantle over the last few hundred million years.
Yet, the true identity of these blobs remains a “major mystery”, as ETH Zurich representatives pointed out. More studies are needed to uncover their origins and properties. 

Diving Deeper: What Next
One intriguing finding is that seismic waves move through these blobs at similar speeds to subducted slabs, hinting at a possible connection. However, this does not confirm they are the same. "We need to calculate the material properties behind these wave speeds to truly understand what’s going on," Schouten explained.

For now, the discovery of these Vibey structures is pushing the boundaries of geological science. As researchers gear up for deeper investigations, the earth’s mantle is proving to be a next-level treasure trove of surprises. Who knows what other secrets lie beneath our feet?
