Eminent scientist Stephen Hawking is dead. The acclaimed physicist, cosmologist and world renowned mastermind scientist passes away only at 76. A great loss to our society and the world!


The family of this mastermind scientist has confirmed the news that Stephen Hawking passed away peacefully at his own home, in Cambridge. According to a statement from his family, “His family have kindly requested that they be given the time and privacy to mourn his passing, but they would like to thank everyone who has been by Professor Hawking's side — and supported him — throughout his life,”.


Stephen Hawking, the world renowned scientist had been wheelchair bound since a very early stage of his life, age 22 to be exact. He was diagnosed with a rare motor neuron disease in 1963. But it seemed his zeal for learning and passion towards unfolding the world and universe around us was unstoppable. Undoubtedly, it’s too early to let him go.

His children Lucy, Tim and Robert said, “He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.”


Stephen Hawking was the Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. This legendary English scientist is mostly revered for his developmental works with black holes, relativity and quantum mechanics. His book A Brief History of Time has been a bestseller for a record breaking 237 weeks. It first released in 1988 and sold over 10 million copies.

Stephen Hawking was ranked on the 25th position in the BBC’s poll of 100 Greatest Britons, in 2002. He was the winner of a number of awards including Adam’s Prize (1966), Albert Einstein Award (1978), Albert Medal (1999), Presidential Medal of Freedom (2009).


It’s still a mystery to many, why Hawking was never awarded Nobel Prize in his lifetime. According to some, it’s due to Hawking’s subject of work - black hole and relativity. As such theories take decades, or even centuries to prove.

Scientist and a forever knowledge seeker Stephen Hawking will always be remembered for his brilliant contributions in science and theories like Hawking Radiation, Hawking Energy, Gibbons-Hawking Space, amongst others. The story of his life was adapted in the 2014 film The Theory of Everything, starring Eddie Redmayne.
