A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake rattled Japan’s northeastern expanse on Friday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami advisory, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The tremor originated off the shoreline of Aomori prefecture at 11:44 a.m. local time (02:44GMT), with its seismic focus positioned 20km (12.4 miles) beneath the earth’s surface, as reported by JMA. Immediate details regarding structural losses or casualties remained uncertain as assessments were still underway.
This seismic jolt came merely days after the region experienced a 7.5-magnitude quake earlier in the week, an event that inflicted injuries, minor structural impairment, and unleashed a small tsunami across several Pacific-facing towns.
Authorities confirmed that at least 34 individuals were injured in Monday’s quake off the coast of Aomori, Japan’s northernmost prefecture on the main island of Honshu.
Friday’s event has rekindled concerns about consecutive seismic disturbances, raising anxieties among residents who are already navigating the aftermath of the earlier, more forceful quake.
