Swimmer Fatally Attacked by a Shark in Sydney; Beaches Closed

Beaches in Sydney have been shut after a swimmer was killed in a shark attack. The swimmer has been identified as Simon Nellist from Wolli Creek.

This is the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 1963.

Simon is a certified diving instructor. He was swimming in Little Bay when the horrifying accident occurred after 4:30 pm.

According to lifesavers Simon swam there every day and he’s received “catastrophic” injuries.

The online footage of the incident is graphic and the scene was chilling according to onlookers.

Human remains have been found in the water at Little Bay. Police have recovered DNA remains from the water to confirm Nellist’s identity.

Simon Nellist was part of the Scuba Diving Social Club in Sidney’s south. He was training for a weekend charity. Photographs on his social media profile affirm that he’s an avid ocean lover.

The search for the shark is still on. Drum lines that are used to bait sharks have been set up in the attack area. Drones are also being used in the search.

A wildlife scientist told ABC that going by the behaviour and size, it points to a Great White Shark.

A friend of the family told ABC that the family requests privacy at this time.
