Teen Star Owen Cooper Wins Emmy for Adolescence

Owen Cooper, 15, made history by becoming the youngest actor ever to win an Emmy. He received the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, held on September 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

In his emotional acceptance speech, Cooper said: “This kind of thing doesn’t usually happen to a kid like me. Wow, it's so surreal. Honestly, when I started those drama classes back then, I didn't expect to be winning this award. I think tonight proves that if you learn, focus, and step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life. I'm thankful. I was nothing about three years ago, but I'm here now.”

He added, “It says my name on the statue, but it really belongs to all the people who worked on the show.”

Cooper starred as Jamie Miller in the hit Netflix miniseries Adolescence, which also took home several other major awards, including Best Limited Series, Best Directing, and Best Writing. Erin Doherty won Best Supporting Actress for her role in the series.

Another highlight of the night was Stephen Graham, who earned a standing ovation after winning Outstanding Lead Actor for his gripping portrayal of Eddie Miller, Jamie’s father.

The four-part series centers on a British family whose life is turned upside down after their 13-year-old son, Jamie, kills a teenage girl. Adolescence explores the harsh complexities of teenage life, resonating deeply with viewers for its timely and relevant themes.

Owen Cooper will next be seen in the BBC’s upcoming drama series Film Club, where he plays Callum, as well as in Emerald Fennell's forthcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

In addition to Cooper and Graham, the Adolescence cast includes Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, Faye Marsay, and Mark Stanley.
