Telangana Tunnel Collapsed, And Railways Joined the Operations as 7 Days Passed
8 workers were trapped inside of Srisilam Left Bank Canal after a portion fell off. Different agencies including Railways are deployed for effective rescue and extraction. Limited sustenance measures are available for people trapped inside.
Close to 8 workers are trapped inside the Srisilam Left Bank Canal after a side of the tunnel`` collapsed on 22nd February. It is believed that minimal life-supporting items, including food and water, are available to the workers. The limited amount of food and water can't sustain them for a longer time and will eventually lead to severe fatality. Different agencies have been engaged in the rescue operations.
Recently the South Division Railway has joined the evacuation process and is supporting the extraction of the trapped workers. Railways have experience in handling and cutting heavy metals. There are equipment such as Broncho Cutters and Plasma cutters that can cut heavy metals at ease.
"District Collector, Nagar Kurnool sought the help of South Central Railway in a rescue operation by clearing iron and steel debris that have been hindering the rescue works at the site,” claimed A Sridhar, Public Relations Officer.
The SCR received a call and responded to it immediately. It deployed two teams of rescue and operations under the guidance of S Murali who is a senior sectional engineer in the Indian Railways. Moreover, welders and technicians have also reached the location and are supporting the rescue operations. The engineers and the technicians have been given their tasks.
Nagarkurnool Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Gaikwad claimed that the respective teams are taking care of the cutting and clearing of the debris so that the trapped people can be reduced soon. "One team went into the tunnel at 7 AM. The clearing of debris has been going on since yesterday morning. Dewatering is also going on,"
The Irrigation Minister of Telangana assured the relatives that the rescue operations are going in full swing and the entire rescue operations will be completed in 2 days. He also claimed that the tunnel-boring machine would be cut into pieces using a gas cutter and then the Rat Miners, Army, and NDRF would be beginning the rescue operations.
The trapped individuals are from various states of India which include Punjab, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Out of the 8 people trapped inside the tunnel, two of them are engineers and two operators, and the remaining people are believed to be laborers that belong to Jharkhand.
The matter brought concerns regarding the safety and security of the labourers working in tunnels. Despite so many advanced technologies and safety practices, the laborers are unable to get out of the trap. While the family and relatives wait patiently for rescue operations and to see their loved ones.
