This Video Shows That Caste Plays a Huge Role When It Comes to Marriage in Modern India

The daughter of a BJP politician in the state of Uttar Pradesh has requested the police to offer her and her husband protection from her family. Last Thursday, Sakshi Mishra, 23, got married to a businessman- Ajitesh who is not of the same caste as hers. He is a Dalit and she is a brahmin. According to her, her father Rajesh Mishra is against the marriage and is a major threat to their lives.
She recorded a video which has now gone viral and sparked outrage among the masses. In the video she has stated “Papa and Vicky, I mean Honourable MLA Pappu Bhartaul ji and Vicky Bhartaul ji, please live and let us live in peace... I really am married; I am not wearing sindoor for fashion.” She refers her father and brother as Pappu Bhartaul ji and Vicky Bhartaul ji respectively.
She alleges that her father sent goons like Rajiv Rana after them after he learnt about their marriage in a temple in Prayagraj. Apparently, the groom and his relatives have also been threatened. “Through this video, I want to say that if in future anything happens to me, Abhi or his family, my father, Vicky Bhartaul and Rajiv Rana will be responsible for it... Those who are helping my father, stop helping him because our lives are in danger. Please Papa, change your mindset. Abhi and his family are good people, they are not animals”, she added.
Sakshi’s father-in-law Harish Kumar also confirmed that his family received a message that they will be killed.

A senior police officer Muniraj G said that the police will definitely give security to the couple however they don’t know about the couple’s whereabouts. They have provided security outside the groom’s home though.
The girl’s father, however, has denied the charges and said that this is all a “political conspiracy.” In his defence he stated that he opposed the marriage because the groom was not earning well as well as because of the huge age difference between them. It has nothing to do with caste. He said that she has the right to make her own decisions. It has come to light however that the lawmaker has four criminal cases against him.
This video proves that caste still plays a major role between two consenting adults when it comes to marriage in India. It goes to the sad extent where even lives are threatened. The bride and groom are still absconding and no one knows their whereabouts.
