The Malayan tiger along with two Amur tigers and three African lions developed dry coughs. They also lost their appetites.
Besides these symptoms, the animals are otherwise doing fine. “They are said to be bright, alert and interactive with the keepers”, said the official statement by the Wildlife Conservation Society that runs the zoo.
They are expected to make a full recovery soon. The statement also said that the knowledge the authorities acquire on studying the effect of the virus on the animal will be contributed to the “world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus.”
The zoo officials emphasized that there is no evidence that animals play a role in the transmission of the virus to humans except the event that had taken place in the Wuhan market that had animals. No one in America has been infected by animals including pets like dogs or cats.
The US Department of Agriculture website said that there have been no reports to prove that animals were infected with the virus before the ‘Nadia Tiger Case.’ “It is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus,” the department's website said.
Before this case, in late March a cat was infected with novel coronavirus in Belgium. In a similar case, two dogs in Hong Kong were tested positive for COVID-19.
