Tokyo Olympics Live Update: Mary Kom Falls off in Pre-Quarters, Australia’s Fox Irresistible in Canoe Slalom

The Tokyo Olympics officially kicked off in a virtually empty stadium Friday night after a yearlong delay due to the pandemic. Here is the latest update of the big event. 

  • Canoe Slalom: Australian Fox Archives defeats Franklin's GB 

Jessica Fox Australia- Gold

Australian legend Jessica Fox finally won the much-anticipated Olympic gold after a thrilling final race on a boat slalom. She, widely regarded as the world's leading female rower, has reduced the course of putting pure water between her and Britain's Mallory Franklin in a silver medal for more than three seconds. Franklin became the second British woman after Helen Reeves to win an award at the Olympic canoe slalom. Andrea Herzog of Germany took the bronze medal at the event.

Japanese Judoka Shori Hamada won the gold medal in the women's 78 kg at the Tokyo Olympics beating France's Madeleine Malonga in the final. The bronze medals went to Anna-Maria Wagner of Germany and Mayra Aguiar of Brazil.

  • Judo Men's -100 kg Division: Japanese judoka Aaron Wolf wins the gold medal

Jorge Fonseca Portugal: Bronze

Niiaz Iliasov ROC: Bronze

Aaron Wolf won the men's gold medal in the men's 100kg at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, beating South Korea's Cho Gu-ham in the final. The bronze medals went to Jorge Fonseca of Portugal and Niiaz Iliasov of the Russian Olympic Committee. Fonseca's medal was the first to be won by a Portuguese athlete at the Tokyo Olympics. Judoka battled cancer before the Rio Games 2016, underwent two chemical treatments to compete in the Olympics.

  • Women's Flyweight Category 48-51kg: Mary Kom lost against Ingrit Valencia

India's Mary Kom lost in her 16th round match against Colombia's Ingrit Valencia 2-3 bows in the Games. Mary won the third and final round 3-2, but the limit of losing in the first round was too much for her to recover from the six-time world champions. The 38-year-old boxer won a bronze medal in India at the 2012 London Olympics.

  • US pole vault champion Sam Kendricks tested the Covid Positive, left the events:

One of the United States “best hope” for a gold, Sam Kendricks is out of the Olympics as he is tested covid positive. Kendricks has won gold medals in the 2017 and 2019 World Cups and was one of Tokyo's top contenders and Swedish world record holder Armand Duplantis. The 28-year-old, who won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

  • Women’s Boxing: Lovlina Borgohain Enters Semis Assuring a Medal for India

Lovlina Borgohain ensured India with their first boxing medal at the Olympic 2020 when she faced former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of China to advance to the semi finals. 

The 23-year-old boxer from Assam won 4-1 to make it to the final where she will play against world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey, who beat Anna Lysenko in her quarterfinal fight. Borgohain, who held two medals with a bronze medal, showed great calm in the face of the opponent who had previously beaten her.
