Tragedy Strikes as Building Collapses in Vasai, Claims Two Lives, Injures Nine

In a devastating incident in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, two people lost their lives and nine others sustained injuries after a section of a residential building collapsed in Vasai late Tuesday night.

According to officials, the accident took place around 12:05 am when the rear portion of the four-storey Ramabai Apartment, situated on Narangi Road, gave way and crashed onto a nearby chawl. Panic and chaos swept through the neighborhood as residents awoke to the sound of crumbling concrete and screams for help.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene immediately. The fire department and two units from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC) in rescue operations. Authorities confirmed that 11 people were pulled out of the debris, though two of them succumbed to their injuries. The deceased was identified as 24-year-old Aarohi Omkar Jovil and one-year-old Utkarsha Jovil.

“Unfortunately, we have lost Aarohi Omkar Jovil and Utkarsha Jovil. Both were found unresponsive beneath the rubble and declared dead upon arrival at the hospital,” said Vivekanand Kadam, District Disaster Management Officer of Palghar.

The injured victims were transported to hospitals in Virar and Nalasopara, located on the outskirts of Mumbai. Doctors are monitoring their condition, with some reported to be in a critical state. Rescue personnel continue to sift through the wreckage with advanced equipment, thermal scanners, and cutting-edge life detection devices to ensure no one remains trapped.

Authorities have erected a temporary barricade around the disaster zone to maintain order and support the ongoing rescue work. Structural engineers are simultaneously inspecting the remains of Rambai Apartment to evaluate stability and determine whether other sections pose imminent danger. Residents in nearby structures have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, highlighting concerns about cascading collapse risks in densely built urban areas.

“Our priority is to ensure that no one remains under the debris. We are using trained rescuers and modern apparatus to continue search operations without interruption,” Kadam reiterated.

Municipal authorities are now focused on a jurimetric assessment of the collapse, probing factors like construction quality, material fatigue, and long-term maintenance neglect. Experts believe structural fragility and possible subsidence could have contributed to the sudden collapse, though investigations are ongoing.

This calamity stands as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of aging urban infrastructures. For families affected, the tragedy has brought unbearable grief, while for civic authorities, it raises urgent questions about preventive sentinelship, inspection protocols, and safeguarding lives against future catastrophes.
