Tragic Electrocution of Elephant Highlights Growing Human-Wildlife Conflict in Coimbatore

Chennai: In a heartrending incident that underscores the escalating tension between humans and wildlife, a 25-year-old elephant was found dead from electrocution near Thondamuthur in Coimbatore district early Thursday morning.

Forest Department officials reported that the elephant likely wandered out of its natural habitat late Wednesday, entering a farmland in Raman Kuttai near Kuppepalayam.

Elephant Knocks Down Electric Pole

Initial investigations suggest that the pachyderm inadvertently toppled a high-voltage electric pole positioned by the electricity board along the edge of a plantation in the farmland.

The live wire that came into contact with the elephant’s body resulted in immediate electrocution, killing the majestic animal on the spot.

Forest officials and veterinarians rushed to the location after receiving alerts from local residents. A post-mortem examination confirmed electrocution as the definitive cause of death. Authorities have launched a probe to determine if any lapses in power line maintenance contributed to this fatal accident.

Frequent Human-Elephant Encounters

This tragedy has left residents in Thondamuthur in shock, as the region has witnessed frequent interactions between humans and elephants in recent weeks.

Locals mentioned that elephants often wander into farmlands and residential zones within the Thondamuthur forest range, causing crop damage and inciting fear among communities.

Just days prior, forest officials captured a rogue elephant known as "Rolex," notorious for entering human settlements and damaging crops. The animal was subsequently relocated to a safer area.

Authorities stressed that preventive measures are being implemented, including enhanced fencing, vigilant monitoring of elephant movements, and the installation of insulated or safer electrical lines in forest-adjacent areas. Such interventions aim to prevent similar tragic encounters in the future and reduce conflict between wildlife and humans.
