Trump Defends Sanctions on India over Russian Oil Purchases

New York/Washington: On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump declared that he had already placed secondary sanctions on India for its continued purchases of Russian oil, stressing that he had not yet initiated “phase two or phase three.”
During a bilateral engagement at the Oval Office with Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki, Trump appeared visibly irked when a Polish journalist questioned him about his apparent dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Lack of concrete countermeasures.
Responding sharply, Trump remarked, “How do you know there's no action? Would you say that putting secondary sanctions on India, the largest purchaser outside of China—they’re almost equal—would you say there was no action? That cost hundreds of billions of dollars to Russia. You call that no action? And I haven’t done phase two yet or phase three. But when you say there’s no action, I think you ought to get yourself a new job.”
Trump further reiterated that he had already warned India weeks earlier: “If India buys, India’s got big problems, and that’s what happens. So, don’t tell me about that.” When questioned about the growing camaraderie between Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Chinese President Xi Jinping during Beijing’s military parade, Trump clarified, “Well, I’ve already done that about India, and we’re doing it about other things.”
In a formal statement, India described the tariffs as “unjustified and unreasonable.” New Delhi emphasized that, like any sovereign economic power, it will take all essential steps to preserve its national interest and shield its economic sovereignty.
