Trump’s Date with the Queen

US President Donald Trump will meet Queen Elizabeth during his visit to Britain, next month. British Prime Minister Theresa May had invited US President Donald Trump for a state visit during their meeting in the US in January 2017. The date with the Queen is expected to be held at the Windsor Castle, recently where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married, but is closed now.

US Ambassador in Britain Woody Johnson, confirmed about the meeting, when asked whether Trump is meeting Queen Elizabeth, Ambassador said, “Meeting her majesty is the most important thing, because she is head of state”, he also said, the other details of the travel has not been finalized. Though Buckingham Palace is yet to release any statement about the said meeting.

The meeting will be on the backdrop of his official visit to Britain for talks with Prime Minister Theresa May. The visit to Britain was as planned as the visit is seen important as traditionally Britain has been the closest ally of United States, as over past few months questions were raised over the state of their relationship.

As immediately after meeting Theresa May in 2017, Trump announced his most controversial ban on travel from some Muslim majority countries. At that time her invitation to President Trump was followed by angry protest from a section of British.

Theresa May has appreciated Trump, because the United States has supported Britain's tough decision against Russia, after the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal came to light. Though the relations between her and Trump have not always been smooth.

But it is the days leading up to the visit and the ones after, that diplomats and UK government figures are worrying about. Late Thursday it emerged, Trump was preparing to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at this time, a move many fear shows his disregard for NATO allies and has them again questioning his commitment to Europe.

Anti-Trump protests are expected across London, for his recent decisions affecting the countries. In the past few months, Trump has opposed European countries and neighbor Canada over unfair trading conditions what Trump believe is wrong and has imposed big tariffs on steel and aluminum.

While the European Union has responded to Trump with its own measures with targets on US goods, Donald Trump has also sent a series of tweets against German Chancellor Angela Merkel over her immigration policy.

The last time when President Trump was invited to the United Kingdom, more than 1.8 million Britons had signed a petition against his visit. British Prime Minister May had invited the President in January for the inauguration of the US embassy in London, but Trump canceled the trip because he did not like the Obama administration’s choice of location for the new facility.

92-year-old Queen Elizabeth is the oldest monarch in British history, who has met 11 of the 12 US Presidents since she ascended the throne in 1952. Although she never met Lyndon Johnson. Former US President Barrack Obama met the Queen three times, including a state visit in 2011.
