Twitter Inc. has made an appeal to its more than 330 million users to change their passwords in order to safeguard their twitter account. After it was found that a technical glitch has stored some of the users' accounts details including the passwords in readable text on its internal system, which it has removed immediately. But to keep more transparency and accountability towards its users, Twitter has informed its users that it has been accidentally done, there it appeals to all its users to change the password for their own satisfaction.


When the information came to the notice of the higher authorities of the social network, they immediately notified the issue and urged its users to take these steps. The communication and appeal was released in a blog post, followed by a number of tweets. In a tweet, it has also said that the issue has been resolved and also an internal investigation has found nothing or done no harm to its 330 million users.


Inspite of all this it urged its entire users to change their passwords, for their own satisfaction. “We fixed the bug and have no indication of a breach or misuse by anyone,” Chief Executive Jack Dorsey said in a Tweet. “As a precaution, consider changing your password on all services where you’ve used this password.” Though the blog did not mentioned how many passwords were affected in the process.


Twitter’s Chief Technical officer, Parag Agarwal wrote on the blog post, "I’m sorry that this happened. We are sharing this information to help people make an informed decision about their account security. We didn’t have to, but believe it’s the right thing to do.” Agarwal also wrote in the statement, “We ask that you consider changing your password on all services where you’ve used this password”.


The disclosure from twitter came at a time when lawmakers and regulators across the world are scrutinizing the way the companies are storing and securing consumer data, after a string of security incidents at Equifax, Facebook and Uber Technologies. More recent being the users data sharing chapter involving world largest social network, Facebook.


In the coming few months, the European Union is going to introduce a strict new privacy law known as General Data Protection Regulation, apart from other punishment the law will enforce steep fees on the violators.


Twitter the company which was founded 12 years back in March 2006 has advised users to take precautions to ensure that their individual accounts are safe, which will include changing passwords and enabling two factor authentication services in built in the site to help prevent accounts from being hacked. In 2010 some agencies accused Twitter of having serious lapses in its data security, which led to the hacking of the site on two occasions in the past.


To change the password one has to first login his or her own account then navigate to the Setting and Privacy where one can find the option of Password change. Enter your present password and then select a new one, thus you are done and safe.
