Two Minors Rescued in Salt Lake after Alleged Abandonment by Mother
Two minors were rescued in Salt Lake after their mother allegedly abandoned them. Locals and police intervened, placing them in protective care. Investigations are ongoing to locate the mother.
Kolkata: In a Distressing incident, locals and the Bidhannagar Police rescued two young children who were allegedly abandoned by their mother in Salt Lake’s DF Block. The siblings—a 7-year-old boy and his 11-year-old sinister—were discovered under a tree shed near a tea stall, left to endure the harsh cold on Monday night.
Authorized reported that early morning walkers and the owner of the tea stall noticed the shivering children on Tuesday morning and immediately alerted the police. The children were then presented before the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Barasat. Subsequently, the girl was placed in a safe home in Kestopur, while her younger was housed in a shelter in Kalighat.
An officer from Bidhannagar City Police recounted, "The children said they were sitting on a platform under the tree outside Shaishali Bhawan from Monday morning with their mother. She left them for an hour in the afternoon, came back again, and fed them snacks from the tea stall. She left in the evening, asking them to wait for her, but she never returned."
Preliminary investigations revealed that the children originally hailed from Midnapore. Following their parents’ separation nearly one and a half years ago, they had been residing in a rented house in Tollygunge. They also mentioned to officers that they had been visiting this particular area in Salt Lake frequently over the past few days.
To trace their mother’s whereabouts, law enforcement officials are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity. The case has sparked discussion about child welfare and parental responsibility, with social activists calling for stronger safety nets for vulnerable minors.
Dinesh Shil, the tea stall owner who first noticed the children, shared his observations: "I noticed the kids sitting outside my shop since Monday. They were with their mother, who looked well-dressed. When I came back to reopen my shop, I found the boy sleeping on the pavement, and the elder sister crying and looking around restlessly. When I enquired, I learned their mother left them there and hasn't returned."
This heartbreaking episode has once again underscored the importance of vigilance in urban communities. The swift response of concerned citizens and law enforcement prevented further distress for the children, who are now under protective care.
