Unexpected Dawn Ordeal as Chennai Metro Passengers Navigate Tracks on Foot
A technical failure on Chennai Metro’s Blue Line forced passengers to walk through a tunnel after their train stalled. Power loss caused confusion, though services were later restored with an official apology.
Chennai commuters encountered an unexpected dawn predicament on Tuesday when travellers heading toward the Wimco Nagar Depot were compelled to traverse the railway track on foot after their metro train abruptly halted inside an underground passageway.
The incident occurred on the Blue Line of the Chennai Metro Rail, which connects Wimco Nagar Depot to the Chennai International Airport. During the early morning hours, the system suffered an unforeseen technical malfunction leaving a train stalled between the Central Metro and High Court Stations.
Passengers reported that the coaches were suddenly plunged into complete darkness, with no electricity to power lights, ventilation, or announcements. Videos circulating online show bewildered commuters gripping the handrails, craning their necks, and trying to decipher the cause of the immobilisation.
After nearly ten minutes of feeling “confined and unsure,” an announcement finally informed riders that they would need to exit the train and walk along the trackbed to the nearest station. The High Court Metro station, approximately 500 metres away, became their only path to safety.
Another video captured the surreal sight of commuters forming a single-file line inside the tunnel, steadily making their way toward the exit in dim light. For many, the unusual trek felt more like an evacuation dril than a routine morning commute.
Initial reports suggest the disruption may have been triggered by either a power discontinuity or an internal system glitch, though officials have not yet confirmed the exact origin of the failure.
Within hours, the Chennai Metro Rail administration restored operations and issued an update on X (formerly Twitter).
The advisory stated:
“Metro train services between Airport and Wimco Nagar Depot on the Blue Line have resumed normal functioning. Services from Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro to St Thomas Mount on the Green Line are also running as per the established schedule.”
The message concluded with a formal apology:
“We regret the inconvenience caused.”
While the technical issue may have been resolved swiftly, the morning’s episode left passengers rattled. For many Chennai residents, the ordeal highlighted the immense reliance on the city’s metro network, and the urgency of ensuring robust, fail-safe infrastructure to prevent such incidents in the future.
